DFTBA Records vs YouTube Mathes
One of YouTube’s employees recently tweeted that 400 tweets per MINUTE include a link to youtube.com. Through a twitter search and some averaging, I’ve found that 4 tweets per HOUR include a link to dftba.com So working out the math, that means DFTBA Records is 1/6000th as popular as YouTube on Twitter. Warning, math content: You can’t directly compare tweets per minute to tweets per hour, so I...

Top 50 Habits of Highly Proactive Indie Musicians
I always get a laugh reading indie music blogs. It seems things that come naturally to YouTube/DFTBA Records musicians have to be laid out in 50 point checklists for everyone else. “Connecting with your audience” shouldn’t be a fucking action item on your To Do list. Stop being a pompous asshole and just have fun strumming your guitar.

RECORD CLUBS!!!
I’ve never wanted to move to the UK more than I want to right now. A few record clubs have formed in the UK. Think of them like book clubs, only, for music. These clubs all sit down together with friends, turn off cell phones and laptops, and just listen to an entire album from start to finish with no interruptions. Oh man. What an experience that is.  I’ve long touted the album as an art form;...

Broadcast Yourself
Dear vloggers who I used to watch, I haven’t been watching many of your YouTube videos lately. Truth is, I’m bored. Whether it’s interactive annotation games, parodies of pop hits, updates about projects you’re really excited about but can’t tell me about yet… Ugh. And the videos that don’t fall into the categories above, are usually trying way too hard to replicate someone else’s style. ...

Trust.
Starting a new project is a high that can’t be topped by any sugar, caffeine or illegal drug. And finishing a new project is even better. But that long, drawn-out road in between… where you’re making mistakes and figuring out what works and what doesn’t. All while having to trust in yourself, that what you’re creating will have some kind of merit or impact, lest all your time be wasted on...

For some reason, the phrase 'Two houses stand...
effyeahdftbarecords: kenzisanerd: Something about it is just incredibly profound. Because Alan Lastufka writes beautiful lyrics. Thanks! My friend Casey wrote a collection of poetry called “Two Houses” a few years ago. I never asked her why she titled it that, but my mind tied it to children growing up with divorced parents. I remember feeling like I had two separate families...

Friends?
I complain to Kristen more than I probably should about “friends” who only skype or email me when they need stuff. It gets really tiring. Like, I understand that I have that relationship with some people, a casual work relationship, and I totally accept that. But lately it’s felt like the people I really consider friends only have time to chat when they need something. All other...

The Problem with Tumblr
Haha, this is only post number two and I’m already complaining. The problem with “social” sites is that, unlike the forums and blogspots of yesteryear, they don’t encourage you to create your own content, they instead encourage mindless retweeting and reblogging of other people’s content. I got a ton of new followers last night after posting about my new album. And...

Not A Sequel
Jason Munday and I recorded the opening track to my next album today. I needed a song that clearly told the listener right from the opening track, “hey, this isn’t a sequel to Erase This”. The song is called “Shine” and I think it accomplishes its mission. The song is kinda pop punk. Think New Found Glory. Only, with my lyrics. I’m super nervous about starting...
