I wish you could mass-edit songs with different titles in iTunes. Maybe to add, say, “(live)” on to the end of every track name on a concert CD. Maybe a command like “* (live)” where the * would keep the original track title, but add “(live)” at the end. Editing each track title, one at a time, gets annoying.
Usually when I say “I wish…”...

channel surfing
I know most “vloggers” these days are entertainers, or informers, or performers, not really video bloggers like back in ‘07 and ‘08. So it was refreshing a couple of weeks ago to stumble onto a classic vlogging channel. One with no fancy edits or scripts or shirts for sale. Her name is Emma, and I really enjoy her videos. They’re short enough, and usually include...

literanerd asked: I'm starting a photography partnership with a friend. Do you have any advice about mixing business/money with friendship?
Anonymous asked: Hi Alan, what advice would you give someone who has just graduated from university with an honors degree yet is having trouble finding even a basic job working in a shop for the summer?
shegsy asked: Just wanted to say your weight loss blogs are really helping me at the moment. Thank you. Hope you get to where you're happy to be. (n_n)
rackiepops asked: What has been the best album to release?
atimewillcomeforsinging asked: It's not quite a question, but more a thank you for all the times you've made me think. Oh! Hey! I can work with that as a question! Who on the interwebs makes /you/ think, Alan?
jamesisaghostdad asked: You and I aren't friends, but I just want to say that I like you because you seem to be the most accessible of the "famous" YouTubers. You've responded to me in comments and replied to tweets, and I appreciate that. You seem like a really good guy. You don't have to respond to this; I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you and the stuff you do.
stateyourporpoise asked: Where did you see yourself today when you were ten (=_= hypothetical tenses are hard)? Were you sure that you'd be doing something musically related, or did you have other plans?
don't quit your day job, kid
I’ve been playing CNBC’s Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge. Basically, CNBC gives you $1,000,000 Internet Dollars and lets you buy and sell stocks for 30 days. The stocks you’re trading are tied to the actual market, but the money you’re playing with is fake.
Whoever has the highest portfolio at the end of the 30 days wins $1,000,000 real dollars. Second place gets a...

I’m genuinely surprised everyone’s all up in arms about FOX cutting Baldwin’s joke on the Emmy’s. I mean, if you were caught breaking the law. If you were caught doing something disgraceful for your profession, your life’s work. Would you really invite your guest to joke about it from your own video feed? No, seriously.
Companies and individuals alike have a public...

projects and communities
I love when my friends work on fun projects. It gets me pumped, seeing a good idea captured and materializing in the real world. Even when that idea is just a website.
This afternoon I got to log in and poke around the new LeakyNews website that will be launching soon. The site is built by most of the same people who brought you The Leaky Cauldron and Leaky Con… only this time it’s...

I covered “Bleeding Love” by Jesse McCartney in 2007
and it remains one of my proudest achievements in music production.
I have your recording of that! Along with the New Found Glory and Green Day covers that (I believe) were never released. Good shit.

Which two records do I buy off DFTBA records?
thestarsshinealldaylong:
Ellen Hardcastle by Hank Green
Bmin/E by All Caps
Erase This by Alan Lastufka and Luke Conard
Confidence Tricks by Eddplant
Still Got Legs by Chameleon Circuit
Help me, I can’t chose!
It depends. What kind of music do you like?
If you like serious songs about serious things like love and love lost and looking for love, you should buy Erase This and Confidence...
As noted recently in a past post, I’m a pathetic reader. Even back in school, I was lucky to be smart enough to get by Honors English without actually picking up half of our reading assignments.
But I’m trying hard to be a better reader. I’ve now set aside 30 minutes a day for uninterrupted reading, of a BOOK. No blogs, no forums, BOOKS. If I can do that for two weeks straight,...
How To Promote
I was recently discussing promotional ideas with one of my published author friends. She has a new book coming out soon. I was appalled by the number of things her publisher wasn’t doing ahead of the release of the book.
Here are things I rambled off the top of my head in just a few very quick emails. Her publisher hadn’t done any of them:
- A website. The author created a fictional, prominent...

I really love DFTBA Records.
icanhassilvia:
I love the way they do business. I just think they are all around awesome.
Thanks! Hank and I - and everyone involved - just want to run the kind of business from which we’d want to buy. The vast majority of every dollar that comes in, goes right back out to the artists, which is rare in the music business.
And we have some of the best customers around…...

I should have thrown up the Nerdfighter sign
cleverramble:
Girl came in and preordered The Fault in Our Stars today, and we both were talking about how much we hoped to get a Hanklerfish :3 and her dad goes “Is there any way to increase the chance of you getting one?” XD It was cute. and then she and her mom proceeded to make fun of her dad for something. It’s so nice to see a kid that age having a good relationship with their parents :)

Home -> Library
I have this weird thing where I can’t read books. Like, books printed on paper. I instantly want to fall asleep. My eyes hurt. I can’t read more than two or three pages without taking a break. It’s insanely frustrating. It’s always been this way.
But I don’t seem to have a problem reading blogs and forums and emails all day long.
So the most recent book I’m...
